Right - and after a little research I found that the US "street price" for ilegally-smuggled Spider Monkeys from Mexico is anywhere from $6K - $12k. It's a lucrative trade so - as usual - Mexico's organized crime groups are involved. Follow-up article coming soon.
The monkeys are part of the (often illegal) “exotic pet” trade. I’m thinking about doing a deeper dive into this soon.
