Border News: Will Tuesday's Elections Spur a Migrant Rush to the Border?
A Texas State Police spokesman says "We anticipate a surge, but Texas is ready."
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is prepared for a possible surge of migrants at the border following Tuesday's elections and before a new President and Congress can be sworn into office in January.
Associated Press reporter María Verza recently reported from Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala, where she found “migrants ... pouring into Mexico." Recent reports indicate that the number of migrants traversing the popular (and dangerous) smuggling route through the Darién Gap between Colombia and Panama has also risen (following the Venezuelan elections), compounding the fears of a developing migrant rush at the U.S. Southern Border with Mexico.
What they are worried about is a repeat of scenes like the one in the screenshot above of news coverage by Mexican television news iNoticias.mx on August 8, 2023 when a migrant mob in Matamoros, Mexico tried to rush an International Bridge to Brownsville Texas. Authorities on the U.S. side closed their side of the bridge before the crowd could cross into Texas.
Here's reporting on that incident from inoticiasmx: "To the cry of Yes we can! Migrants invade the Puerta México International Bridge in Matamoros early Tuesday morning, seeking to enter the US. American authorities blocked the passage halfway through the crossing and it has been like this for more than 10 hours.”
The DPS says they are both aware of the threat of - and prepared for - a potential migrant rush of the Texas border should one occur:
“We are closely monitoring. There are tens of thousands of immigrants waiting in southern Mexico (to see) what will happen and we anticipate a surge but Texas is ready.” DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez (via Fox News) October 31, 2024
So far there have been no public comments by U.S. federal officials to these concerns. This is a developing situation - so follow my reports to see how this unfolds.
Are you concerned about a potential migrant "surge" on the US - Mexico Border following the elections?
